"…The Department of Treasury and Finance traces its history to 25 June 1804 when the first Government finance officer arrived in Van Diemen's Land. A Colonial Treasurer's Department was established in 1824 and four years later, the Office of the Collector of Internal Revenue and the Customs Department. With the granting of Responsible Government in 1856, the Colonial Treasurer became an elected Member of Parliament and the position of Assistant Colonial Treasurer was created as administrative head of the Department. Following the reorganisation of responsibilities that took place at Federation, the Treasury Department was created, headed by an Under-Treasurer.
