About this course
Web 2.0 refers to the so-called second generation of the web. It's a little hard to define but usually includes web-based communities such as social-networking sites, wikis and folksonomies which aim to facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.
The term became popular following the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the internet. According to Tim O'Reilly, "Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.".
What you will learn
By the conclusion of this session you should have a much clearer idea about what Web 2.0 is and what it means to you as a webmaster, business owner, marketer or developer.
We'll start with a brief history of the web, making comparisons between 1st generation web technologies and Web 2.0 equivalents, and discussing whether Web 2.0 really is a second generation shift.
The levels of Web 2.0 technology will then be discussed, illustrating the range of characteristics that define a Web 2.0 application before looking at the specific aspects of RSS feeds, Mashups, Ajax and other common implementations of Web 2.0 technology.
We then focus on successful case studies such as Del.icio.su, eBay, Facebook and Linkedin and look at how these examples have contributed to interest in Web 2.0.
Finally, we'll examine how these technologies can be used to your advantage and how your web strategy should embrace or avoid the Web 2.0 manifesto.
