About this course
In its short history, Joomla has become the platform of choice for millions of sites worldwide. Initially a blogging engine like Blogger and Tyepad, Joomla has grown to become a full content management system deployed in sophisticated environments from eCommerce to travel to galleries and much more.
But for all its power, the appeal of Joomla is in its simplicity and ease of use, demanding very little of the web newbie while allowing those with more savvy to take it to new heights.
This course assumes little prior knowledge of the web, taking you through the steps of downloading the Joomla installation files, deploying them to a host, setting up a database, choosing a theme, and getting underway with posting and publishing. It's a great introduction to the topic regardless of your requirements and provides a solid foundation for further work in the field.
Assumed knowledge
Beginners are welcome to attend this course as we will assume little in terms of prior knowledge but you should be comfortable working with Mac or Windows computers and have a reasonable aptitude for digital media.
We'll give you some HTML and CSS along the way but if you've had a chance to explore the basics of web design before you'll find the course easier to follow.
What you will learn

This course will provide you with sufficient knowledge to create a simple website using Joomla's CMS interface. We'll take you through the initial concepts before explaining how to download Joomla, install it on a web server and setup the MySQL database required to run it.
Once Joomla has been installed we'll show you how to set all of the important options, write and publish posts, upload images and format your content with some simple HTML and CSS.
We'll then explain how to select and apply a theme, adjust the basic settings and options to make the most out of it, then tell the world about your brand new baby.
By the end of the day you'll be a little tired but you will have created your own Joomla site and understand the process well enough that you can do it again!
